Arizona Broadband Stakeholder Network 
Roundtable​ -- ​May 28, 2019

The Network and Roundtable will provide public and private stakeholders opportunities to collaborate on initiatives and strategies to accelerate deployment of fast, affordable and reliable Broadband Internet access to communities throughout Arizona, and to enable those communities to utilize those connections to support 21st Century education, create jobs and support economic development, train a 21st century workforce, enhance public safety and health care, and connect their citizens to the world.

Imagine traveling to Phoenix from Bisbee or Flagstaff or Yuma in a horse and buggy on a one lane dirt road, rather than zooming down the freeway in your car at 75-80 miles an hour. Broadband Internet connections are like that too.
 About the Roundtable
ATIC, the Arizona Telecommunications and Information Council, and GAZEL, the Greater Arizona eLearning Association, are leading the development and coordination of the Arizona Broadband Stakeholder Network. In May 2019 we will present the first of a series of Stakeholder Roundables from 2:00-6:00 pm in Phoenix Arizona (location TBA).

​We expect 100+ public and private stakeholders to attend the Roundtable representing economic development, education, local and state government, health services, public safety, libraries,  telecommunications and technology companies, and more.
The Network and Roundtables will provide stakeholders opportunities to collaborate on initiatives and strategies to accelerate deployment of fast, affordable and reliable Broadband Internet access in communities throughout Arizona, and to enable those communities to utilize those connections to support 21st Century education, create jobs and support economic development, train a 21st century workforce, enhance public safety and health care, and connect their citizens to the world.

​Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records
The Arizona State Library Archives and Public Records is a Division of the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office. The State Library serves the public through four branches: the Arizona Talking Book Library, Library Development, the State of Arizona Research Library and the E-Rate Administration and envisions that all Arizonans will have access to information in a variety of formats; Arizona's history will be preserved for future generations, and local institutions will be empowered to engage their communities in learning.

​Through the Library Development and E-rate Branches, the Arizona State Library has brought in over $60 Million for its public libraries around the state to provide internet access and access to e-resources, assist in broadband adoption and training. It continues to work towards not only making broadband available and meeting FCC standards but also in making it affordable.  

Why Broadband Is Important 

Wired or wireless, with the proliferation of the Internet, mobile phones, communication devices, and wireless networks we are rapidly moving from a world of simple voice communication and isolated desktop computing to an interconnected world of networked communities and anytime/anywhere connectedness where everyone and everything is connected. The Network will operate everywhere, connecting people and devices seamlessly. -Living in a Networked World-Computer Systems Policy Project
Gone are the days of smoke signals and the viability of dial-up Internet connections.

Like water, roads and electricity, in today’s Networked World fast, affordable and reliable Broadband Internet access is a critical infrastructure for community development and the health, safety, welfare, educational advancement, and economic prosperity in Arizona communities.

​Unfortunately, many tribal, rural and other underserved communities in Arizona do not have fast, reliable and affordable broadband access.

But Broadband Internet connections alone are not enough. Arizona’s citizens must also have access to technologies such as computers, smart phones smart electric meters, smart appliances, entertainment devices, and more.

And, they must have the ability to use those technologies effectively.

​Many Arizonans, however, do not have access to, cannot afford, or are not prepared to use these technologies to participate effectively in the Digital World.

 There are a number of individuals and organizations engaged in initiatives to promote the expansion of broadband deployment in Arizona.

Stakeholders will come together to build a constituency and enable collaboration, coordination, information sharing and communication.

​They will learn something new, share what they know, make connections with other collaborators, find resources and help for their initiatives, and hear about and provide updates on federal, state and local initiatives in Arizona.
