October 7, 2019 Meeting Summary Summary
Attendees: Steve Peters, Henry Goldberg, Mala Muralidharan
Steve, Mala, and Henry discussed informally next steps for the Arizona Broadband Stakeholder Network (AZBSN) due to the small number of people participating in the teleconference.
Steve is creating a contacts database as a Google Doc spreadsheet that will later be migrated to a CRM platform (most likely the “Mobilize” CRM donated to GAZEL, which has more functionality than Mailchimp). Steve is starting with the list of contacts Mark Goldstein provided for the May 28th roundtable, and Mala will look into whether she can get a contact list of the service providers in the state from the state government procurement office.
Steve wants to organize the next AZBSN roundtable in mid-November before Thanksgiving or in the first week of December. We discussed inviting the following speakers for the roundtable:
Steve is modifying his current AZBSN sponsorship request document to include the benefits of different levels of sponsorship based on funding provided. He will be contacting a number of service providers as well as other organizations to be AZBSN sponsors.
Henry will write up a summary report of today’s leadership team meeting.

Quick update
Following the meeting Steve spoke with Jeff Sobotka. The ACA meeting room would not be available this year. He also checked with Rio Salado, they didn't have any workable dates this year so still looking for venue.
Suggestions for Roundtable Program
The following or some suggested presenter for the roundtable that features a mix of government and private sector presenters. may be too many so these are just for consideration:
- On October 10, I (Steve) attended an Advancing Communications Stakeholder workshop presented by the Pima Association Of Governments (PAG). They have launched an Advancing Communications Regional Assessment Stakeholder planning process. Jeff Sobotka was one of the presenters providing an overview of state strategy and accomplishments. PAG has contracted with Magellan Advisors to mage the planning process. Magellan provides leading broadband, smart city, information technology and security consulting services to public and private organizations. We are a full spectrum planning and implementation firm that brings together technology, communications and utility consulting to create smart gigabit cities of tomorrow.
- Jory Wolf, VP of Digital Innovation provided probably the best presentation I have seen on state and local broadband planning. After the meeting I spoke with him and he said he would be willing to provide a presentation at an AZBSN Roundtable either in person or online. I will be checking with him about availability and his next trip to Arizona.
- At the last ATIC Board meeting Omar with ViaSat did a great presentation about ViaSat.
- Electronic Design and Development Corp. ed2corp.com/(ED2), a Tucson startup is developing low-cost equipment for emerging 5G data networks. ED2 has developed low-cost filters to clean up 5G signals; a first-of-a-kind universal 5G wireless software-based repeater to extend current 5G range and penetration; and a low-cost, low-power consumption 5G antenna. ED2’s products are part of a radio-frequency front-end component market that is estimated to grow from about $19 billion this year to nearly $40 billion by 2025, according to figures from market research company Yole Development. I have met with them and they would be interested in presenting also.
- Mala to discuss Arizona vs national E-rate progress,
- Dr. Ronald Weinstein, Director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program, or Janet Major to discuss broadband issues for telemedicine.
